Welcome to the 10th issue of EOKHUB Magazine.
Field data today reveals an undeniable truth: the landscape of global conflict is accelerating. We are witnessing an unprecedented deployment of new explosive ordnance (EO) alongside the rapid, lethal modification of existing munitions. The intention on the modern battlefield is clear—speed up the conflict and bypass conventional defenses.
For the Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) sector, this presents an existential challenge. EO risks can no longer be forced into a static risk matrix. The threat is everywhere, and it is highly adaptable, with conflict dynamics shifting radically every six months.
This brings us to a critical question: Is our sector truly ready for this?
Are we agile enough to meet a semi-annual evolution, or are we locked into HMA frameworks from two, or even ten, years ago? This hyper-accelerated reality piles onto a historical burden we have yet to resolve. We must remember that, over a century later, we still have not fully eliminated the EO risks stemming from the Great War. We are fighting a multi-generational battle—managing the entrenched legacy of the past while struggling to catch up to the rapid-fire innovation of the present.
Traditional models were built for a slower era of post-conflict stabilization. Waiting years to update standards and methodologies is a luxury we can no longer afford. If we, as a collective sector, cannot evaluate and evolve as fast as the threats we face, we risk falling behind permanently.
In Issue No. 10, we explore these urgent field dynamics, the realities of modified EO, and how the HMA community must break free from outdated paradigms.
